Written in 1887, this example of Wilkie Collins' short stories was written towards the end of his career. The plot follow Evan Fencote as he unravels the tangled problems of his wife-to-be.

Collins's works were known as "sensation novels," the forerunner to detective and suspense fiction. He was also known for his focus on the social and domestic issues of his time, especially as related to women.
